Group BTF Winners (Jo and Matt) beat Group MONIN Winners (Pam and Greg) by 3 games to 2

mixed tournament - 25th June 2017 - the report
The competitors on Chilhams version of Henmans Hill

On a pleasantly warm sunday afternoon, 10 pairs battled out the clubs mixed tournament. A rare glitch in the clubs tournament organiser software almost brought proceedings to a halt but David and William came to the rescue and agreed to be honorary ladies for the afternoon. Later, Marion stepped up to replace Katie who had to retire with a leg injury.
The tournament was arranged into 2 groups of 5 pairs who played each other in a round robin format. The groups were named after the clubs proud sponsors, Monin and BTF. Each match consisted of 4 games followed by a tie-breaker. The winners of each group would then play in a Grand Final to decide this years winners of the Chilham Tennis Club and Woolpack shield.
Pam and Greg came top in Group Monin with 14 games narrowly beating David and Rob on 13 games.
Jo and Matt won Group BTF with 13 games, Elena and Dan finishing second on 11 games.
For the Grand Final, Paul, Will and Elena formed a tightly organised team of ball boys and girl and Geoff sat precariously on a decorating ladder to umpire. The final was a well contested and sporting affair despite a John McEnroe moment from Greg which was dealt with very calmly by the umpire. With the score at 2 games all, the two teams entered the tie-breaker with all to play for. The tie-breaker swung both ways before Jo and Matt came back from 4-2 down to win 7-5.
Soft drinks, savories and fruit were supplied by Liz so the competitors could recharge their energy levels as they watched some well fought and entertaining matches on the courts.
